Joe and I needed some sort of coffee table for our living room - mostly because I was sick of balancing things on a pillow in my lamp or sitting on the floor with something on the floor in front of me.
We looked at your basic furniture stores and even places like Target but didnt find anything we really liked in our price range. Coffee Tables are expensive - and ideally I wanted a coffee table/end table set.
After over a month of searching we had finally nailed down that we wanted a coffee table with a glass top so that we didnt have to worry about coasters, but I didnt want all glass.
Then we found a set on Craig's List for a coffee table and two end table set for $200. Still a bit more than we wanted to pay but I figured I would inquire and see if he would take less for them and offered $150. He responds back that they are in storage but that he will get back to me in a week. ..... Did he even want to sell them? Why do you post if you dont want to get right of them ASAP?
He finally gets back to me a week later and says he has them now if I want to go take a look at them but that he wants a full $200. I negotiated with him and get him down to $175 and we set up a time to drive the 1/2 hour out there.
Now for any of you who have bought/sold things off Craig's List know that most of the people on there are totally normal but sometimes there is the odd duck. This guy was not dangerous but there was a few really strange things about our interaction.
Besides listing the tables that he really didnt have, he also did the following:
-Showed up late to the meeting at his own house-Told us his life story in the 4 minutes we talked to him. I learned he was building a new house and this one was just temporary, he has two daughters, his wife died of cancer, he is the president of a company, the house he used to live in was 6000 sq feet.....the list goes on.
-He told us that he “held” these for us and that a lot of people wanted them. Odd that when I told him we didn’t want them at $200 that he came down at all if he had someone that would have taken them at $200
-He also told us that he has a lot of money and doesnt really need the money from this sale...that he would just use it to take his daughters out to dinner. I am happy for him that he has a lot of money but then why wouldnt he take the original $150 I had offered for the tables?
Oh well at least we ended up with nice tables for less than we would have been able to do if we had bought them new.

And just because he is cute - our dog, Neeko, watching me take pictures from his favorite vantage point in the living room.
